Imagine having to hide behind a secret that you cannot even share
with your teacher or best friend. To a child living with life-threatening
illnesses this is too often their reality. Now, imagine coming to
a place where there are no secrets, where you can play with other
kids and not have to hide your feelings or who you are.
Kids just want to be Kids!
Remember the first time you went to camp? Late night ghost stories,
splashing around in the water with your pals, roasting marshmallows
over the campfire. At Camp Arroyo, the children do all of these
things with the feeling they are safe and secure. They also amaze
themselves,
and others, by doing things they did not know they were capable
of doing.
Our Extra Touch
Camp Arroyo is truly special in many ways. Our campers receive extra
care and attention from highly trained round-the-clock medical staff.
Trained volunteer counselors give the campers their undivided attention
and build friendships based on dependability and trust. Many of
our campers have lost one or both parents from related illnesses.
At Camp Arroyo, the children are able to talk about their feelings
in a safe and nurturing place.
No Place to Go
Before 2001 no "permanent" camp existed in Northern California
for
children suffering with HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.
A few camps existed for children with cancer, yet no one camp opened
its doors to all children with life-threatening illnesses. Camp
Arroyo,
a new, energy efficient facility, offers healthy nutritious food
and FUN, FUN, FUN in a safe and carefree environment.
